Lupoglav within reach of the clouds

Just a step away from the highest parts of Istria along the Učka and Ćićarija, a unique mountain range with which this largest Croatian peninsula in its north-eastern part leans on the neighbouring coastal region, look out for Lupoglav. Located in the safe shelter of these Istrian "giants", in a former important strategic observation position, Lupoglav today is a paradise for all fans of outdoor activities, hikers, climbers and all outdoor adventure enthusiasts. The settlement of Lupoglav has long occupied a very favourable position in terms of traffic. Once it was an important crossing of old roads, and it is believed that as early as around year 1000 there was a fortress on the site from which the trade routes, that passed through, could be controlled. Today the road routes connecting the region of Istria with the rest of Croatia together with the railway junction through which the Pula - Ljubljana railway passes, can be found here. The people of this area have been engaged in animal husbandry since ancient times, and this tradition is still preserved to a lesser extent, so pastures with livestock are still a common sight in this gorgeous area below the slopes of the Istrian mountains.

Mahrenfels and Brigido Castles

Old medieval Lupoglav, recorded as Mahrenfels (in German meaning fortified rock), was located on an inaccessible hill at the foot of the Učka cliffs, more precisely above today's Gorenje Vas cemetery with the little church of Our Lady of the Rosary. Thanks to its strategic position, it was the "guardian of the crossing" over Učka. It changed many owners, but only Pompeo Brigido had the strength to take a radical step towards abandoning the medieval castle of Mahrenfels. In 1643, he built a new residence, the castle of Brigido, which looks more like an outbuilding, the remains of which are today located east of the train station.
